My Work
I am a clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience providing individual and couples therapy. My primary goal is to help my clients find deeper meaning, authenticity, and peace, within themselves, in their relationships, and in their work and play. I work with clients in Georgia and Florida via telehealth (a secure Zoom-based platform).
Strategies for Healing
I use several strategies to help clients navigate difficult life transitions and recover from depression, anxiety, stress and loss. In some cases, counseling involves learning new skills for managing difficult feelings, such as fear, sadness or anger. Other times, therapy focuses on learning new ways to communicate and resolve conflict in relationships. Effective therapy is characterized by empathy and team work. As a practitioner of experiential psychotherapy, I work collaboratively with clients to find their own unique, meaningful goals, and to develop the skills to work toward those goals in a joyful, fulfilling manner. I utilize a variety of methods for understanding and managing emotions, including narrative therapy, guided imagery, mindfulness, emotion regulation training, and grounding exercises. I use humor and creativity in my work whenever possible.
Grief and Trauma
Sometimes, finding a way forward requires working through painful experiences from the past. This may involve processing or talking through traumatic memories. For many of us, working through past experiences is necessary before we can be fully available or present for our current relationships. I understand the importance of establishing a working relationship with clients in this work, pacing the work, and together setting goals and deciding what steps to take. With some clients, I use a technique called "eye movement desensitization reprocessing" (EMDR) to resolve the effects of past losses and traumas. This method has been proven to be an effective treatment for trauma-related problems.
Finding Your Way
Overall, my approach is "experiential." This means that I believe the ultimate wisdom for solving your problems resides within you -- that the answers are found in your own experience and life stories. My job is to use my skills as a therapist to help you find your internal wisdom and the courage to listen to it.
Sexual Abuse Prevention
I am also an authorized facilitator for a sexual abuse prevention program entitled "Stewards of Children" sponsored by the nonprofit organization Darkness to Light (D2L.org). This program teaches adults to be aware of, recognize and react responsibly to the reality of sexual abuse. I provide training in sexual abuse prevention as a service to the community.
